The primary goal of this event is to give everyone in the Magnus Archives fandom a chance to celebrate our beloved protagonist by creating works incorporating or focused on his asexuality! In particular, we want to create space for all of the many, many aces in this fandom to represent and see themselves represented in TMA fanfiction, and also engage with those works in a comfortable and positive way.
We strongly believe that all asexuals, no matter what variety of ace they are or how they choose to express themselves, are awesome and deserve to enjoy the (unfortunately rare) experience of having a character that is canonically just like us (!!!) to the utmost. As such, with this event we will be trying our best to address some issues that fans have raised in the past as barriers to writing and reading ace-centric TMA fanfic in order to make it as inclusive as possible. Specifically, our approach includes:
1) A prompt-based format. We understand that, with so many different ace experiences out there, sometimes there isn’t very much in fanfic that speaks to you - and it’s not always as simple as “write it yourself.” That’s why we’ll be using Dreamwidth for the main part of this event: beginning on finale day, you can post general or specific ideas for fics, including details of the ace rep you want included. Then, during the event proper, we’ll be challenging fandom writers to fill as many prompts as they can!
Of course, non-prompted fics will also be accepted, and we will have AO3 collections for this purpose. Art is welcome too! So if you’ve got something you’ve been wanting an excuse to make, don’t worry.
2) Anonymity. Some folks have voiced worries about sharing their ace-centric fics because they are, of course, very personal pieces of writing. That’s why the Dreamwidth will be anonymous, and the AO3s will be anonymous by default. You’re still welcome to request your name be revealed on AO3 works, or cross-post your works elsewhere if you’d like to have your name attached, but anon will be the standard.
We also have a strong “no hate” policy for comments, which will be explained in detail in the Rules, and we will be moderating accordingly.
3) Categorization and mandatory tagging. Not everyone is comfortable seeing all types of content, and regardless, most of us prefer to know what we’re getting into. To address the first part of that, we’re dividing the DW and AO3 collections into two separate entities: one SFW section and one NSFW/kink section. There’s also a mandatory tagging policy: most notably we want to experiment with attaching an “ace flavor” tag (sex-repulsed, sex-neutral, sex-favorable) to every fic, as well as tags indicating whether asexuality is the primary focus or more of a background thing, etc.
We’re also open to hearing from members of the fandom as to how we can best help you enjoy this event! We can’t guarantee that we will implement all suggestions, as there are a lot of competing interests at work (for instance, we’re not going to be outright banning any type of content, even if some people may find it uncomfortable), but we will do our best to take everyone’s thoughts into account. If this goes well, we want to keep the DW and collections open, and also have some ideas for future mini-events, so we hope you’ll help make this event a positive experience for everyone!
